Characterised by its durability and tactile surface, its colour spans from a golden-yellow to rich brown. Appearance

Board Edges: Available in Live Edge, Waney Edge or Square Edge

Colour & Grain: The warm golden-yellow base of the American Pine occasionally deepens to a rich brown. It mostly presents a straight grain, exuding a tidy and continuous aesthetic.

Patterns: While its texture is predominantly consistent, there are instances where faint knots or swirls elevate its rustic charm.

Durability: American Pine, specifically Carolina Pine, is a softwood and is not as durable as many hardwoods. It is, however, popular for its rustic appearance and is often used in paneling, flooring, and cabinetry. Its natural resin can offer some resistance to decay, but it's more susceptible to dents and scratches due to its soft nature.

Workability: Being a softwood, Carolina Pine is easy to work with, both with hand tools and machinery. It cuts, planes, and sands smoothly. Due to its softer nature, sharp tools are essential to minimize tearing. It accepts stains and finishes well, but its resinous nature can occasionally cause issues with certain finishes.

Insect Attack: Carolina Pine can be susceptible to insect attacks, especially from termites and certain beetles. It's important to monitor for signs of infestation and treat or protect the wood as necessary.

Fixings: Given its softer nature, Carolina Pine can be nailed or screwed without pre-drilling. However, using high-quality stainless steel or coated fasteners is ideal to avoid potential staining or rusting over time.

Fire: American Pine has average fire resistance compared to other softwoods. Treatments can enhance its resistance, but untreated pine should be used with the usual fire precautions.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
