From the verdant woods of North America, Tulip Tree, often referred to as Yellow Poplar, is famed for its resilience and adaptability. Colour & Grain: The soft, creamy undertones of the Tulip Tree can sometimes transition to a subtle greenish-yellow. It boasts a largely straight grain, providing a neat and seamless look.

Patterns: Generally consistent in texture, certain variants might display subtle patterns, adding to its allure.

Durability: The Tulip Tree is not particularly durable when exposed to outdoor elements, making it more suitable for interior applications. It's often used in furniture making, moldings, and as a veneer due to its even grain and pale color.

Workability: Tulip Tree wood is relatively easy to work with due to its fine, even grain and medium density. It responds well to hand and machine tools, resulting in a smooth finish. Because of its softer nature (for a hardwood), sharp tools are beneficial in achieving clean cuts.

Insect Attack: The Tulip Tree can be susceptible to insect infestations, particularly from termites. It's essential to monitor for signs of wood-boring insects and treat the wood as necessary.

Fixings: The wood holds screws and nails well. Pre-drilling is sometimes recommended to prevent splitting, especially when using larger fasteners or when working close to edges. It's advisable to use high-quality stainless steel or brass fixtures to prevent staining.

Fire: Tulip Tree wood has average fire resistance typical of many domestic hardwoods. As always, safety precautions should be taken, and the wood can be treated to enhance its fire-resistant properties.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
