Board Edges: Available in Waney Edge / Live Edge or Square Edge.

Colour & Grain: Birch showcases tones ranging from pale yellows to richer reds. Its grain is typically fine and even, leading to a smooth, polished facade.

Patterns: Although predominantly uniform, occasional flares or ripple-like patterns can enhance its allure.

Durability: Based on BS EN350-2 standards, Birch has moderate durability. When treated properly, it can resist decay but is generally best for indoor uses.

Workability: Birch timber stands out for its workability. It offers a fine grain that cuts smoothly, sands to a silky finish, and adheres well to stains and finishes. This versatility makes Birch a favorite for furniture making, cabinetry, and interior finishes.

Insect Attack: Though birch timber is relatively resilient, it can be susceptible to certain insect adversaries. Regular inspections for wood-boring beetles or other invasive pests are key to maintaining its quality.

Fixings: For birch installations, the use of stainless steel nails or fasteners is recommended. To avert potential wood splitting, always pre-drill before introducing nails or screws.

Fire: Birch fire classifications typically span from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
