Overview

Hailing from the broadleaf deciduous trees of the Northern Hemisphere, it is renowned for its toughness and interlocking grain. Exhibiting a range of warm browns intermingled with lighter tans, this hardwood effortlessly pairs functionality with a distinctive aesthetic appeal. Given its resistance to splitting and unique grain patterns, it is a prime candidate for furniture making, joinery, and veneer production.

Appearance

Board Edges: Available in Waney Edge / Live Edge or Square Edge.

Colour & Grain: The timber is characterised by a spectrum of rich browns juxtaposed against soft tans. Its grain, often interlocking, contributes to a captivating and textured look.

Patterns: Beyond its typical grain, it can occasionally showcase intriguing patterns like bird’s-eye or unique swirls, further accentuating its charm.

Durability: Elm, as per BS EN350-2 standards, is noted for its good durability and resistance to decay, especially when not in contact with the ground.

Workability: Elm is known for its distinctive interlocking grain, making it resistant to splitting. While this can pose challenges in certain tasks, the timber's overall workability is good. It responds well to both hand and power tools, making it a choice material for items like furniture, flooring, and boat-building.

Insect Attack: Elm wood can be particularly vulnerable to the Elm Bark Beetle, which can spread Dutch Elm Disease. Periodic assessments are critical to ensure the timber remains free from infestations.

Fixings: For elm installations, stainless steel nails or screws are advised. To prevent potential splitting of the wood, always pre-drill holes before inserting nails or screws.

Fire: Elm's fire classifications typically range from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
