Overview

From the verdant expanses of North America, American Cherry is lauded for its elegance and malleability. This timber, often simply known as Cherry, is characterized by its lightweight nature, smooth touch, and rich colour palette. Transitioning from a reddish-pink to a deep red-brown over time, its aesthetic charm thrives in furniture, joinery, and fine woodworking projects.

Colour & Grain: The inherent reddish-pink hue of the Cherry matures to a profound red-brown. Dominantly, its grain structure is fine and straight, exuding a refined, consistent look.

Durability: American Cherry is a moderately durable hardwood. It is known for its rich color and smooth grain, making it a favored choice for fine furniture, cabinetry, and musical instruments. However, it is mainly recommended for indoor applications, as it isn't particularly resistant to decay when exposed to outdoor conditions.

Workability: American Cherry is relatively easy to work with due to its straight grain and medium density. It machines, sands, and finishes beautifully, delivering an exquisite, warm hue that deepens over time. The wood's workability makes it a favorite among woodworkers and craftsmen.

Insect Attack: American Cherry is moderately resistant to insect attacks. While it does offer some natural protection, it isn't especially known for its resistance to pests like termites. Regular inspection and proper maintenance can help preserve the wood's integrity.

Fixings: American Cherry holds screws and nails effectively, but as with many hardwoods, pre-drilling is suggested to minimize the risk of splitting. When fastening, high-quality stainless steel or brass fixtures are preferred to prevent staining and ensure a lasting bond.

Fire: American Cherry's fire resistance is in line with other domestic hardwoods. Its specific fire rating will depend on various factors, including treatments. In general, it provides average fire resistance and should be treated as such in applications.
