Durability: European Walnut is a moderately durable wood. While not as resistant to decay as some tropical hardwoods, it's suitable for many interior applications, including fine furniture, cabinetry, and decorative veneers.

Workability: European Walnut is generally easy to work with, both with hand tools and machinery. It sands and finishes well, producing a rich final appearance. Its moderate density ensures it doesn't blunt tools as quickly as harder woods might.

Insect Attack: While European Walnut possesses some resistance to pests, it's not especially known for being highly resistant to insect attack. Regular inspection and protective measures are essential to ensure the wood's longevity.

Fixings: European Walnut holds screws and nails well, though pre-drilling is often recommended, especially near the edges, to prevent splitting. When using fixings, it's best to opt for high-quality stainless steel or brass to avoid potential staining or reactions.

Fire: European Walnut's fire resistance is relatively standard for hardwoods. Specific treatments can enhance its fire resistance, but untreated European Walnut should be used with the same precautions as other hardwoods regarding fire.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
