Durability: American Maple, often referred to as hard maple or sugar maple, is a dense and durable hardwood. Its durability and resistance to abrasion make it suitable for a range of applications, including flooring, cabinetry, and worktops. It's less suited for exterior applications without protective treatments.

Workability: Due to its density, American Maple can be somewhat challenging to work with, especially when compared to softer woods. It machines well, but care must be taken when using hand tools. It sands to a smooth finish, and it's known to accept stains and finishes uniformly, resulting in a high-quality final appearance.

Insect Attack: While American Maple is not particularly known for its resistance to insect attacks, it's not especially susceptible either. As always, regular monitoring and preventive measures are recommended.

Fixings: Given the density of American Maple, pre-drilling is recommended when introducing screws or nails to prevent potential splitting. When fastening, using high-quality stainless steel or brass is advised to avoid any staining or corrosion.

Fire: American Maple's fire resistance is comparable to other domestic hardwoods. Its specific fire rating can vary based on treatments and conditions, but it generally offers average fire resistance.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
