Durability: Eucalyptus wood is known for its good durability, especially when properly seasoned and treated. Certain species of eucalyptus, like the Red Mahogany or Jarrah, are particularly resistant to decay and can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications.

Workability: Eucalyptus has a moderate workability, as it can be hard and dense, depending on the species. It generally machines well, but its high silica content can dull cutters. For best results, use sharp tools, and be prepared for possible gum buildup on blades.

Insect Attack: Many eucalyptus species are naturally resistant to termites and other wood-boring insects, primarily due to their essential oils. However, it's always a good practice to monitor for any signs of infestation.

Fixings: Pre-drilling is recommended when using fixings with eucalyptus wood to prevent splitting, especially near the ends of the boards. Stainless steel or galvanized fixings are ideal for preventing corrosion and staining.

Fire: Eucalyptus wood's fire resistance varies among species, with some offering better resistance than others. While the natural oils in eucalyptus can make it more flammable, certain treatments can enhance its fire resistance. Check specific species and treatments for detailed fire ratings.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
