Patterns: Though its feel remains largely consistent, sporadic dark streaks or spots elevate its intrinsic beauty.

Durability: Jatoba, also known as Brazilian Cherry, is highly durable and is naturally resistant to rot and decay. Its impressive strength and density make it suitable for both indoor flooring and outdoor decking applications.

Workability: Due to its hardness and density, Jatoba can be challenging to work with. While it machines relatively well, the wood's interlocked grain can cause tearout during planing and other woodworking operations. Carbide-tipped blades are recommended for cutting, and pre-drilling is a must for screwing and nailing.

Insect Attack: Jatoba's natural density and oils make it resistant to most insect attacks, including termites. However, as with any wood, it's essential to monitor for potential infestations and take preventive measures if required.

Fixings: When using fixings with Jatoba wood, it is crucial to pre-drill to avoid splitting due to the wood's density. Stainless steel or high-quality galvanized fixings are recommended to prevent reactions with the wood's natural chemicals and potential staining.

Fire: While Jatoba's density provides some natural resistance to fire, its specific fire rating would depend on the exact conditions and treatments. In general, it may not reach the fire resistance levels of specially treated timbers, but it offers better resistance than many softer woods.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
