Overview

Emerging from the dense rainforests of West and Central Africa, Azobé stands out for its extreme durability and remarkable strength. Often known as Red Ironwood, this timber is characterized by its significant weight, smooth yet tough texture, and a colour palette that spans from dark reddish-brown to deep purple-brown. Its resilience against wear and the elements makes Azobé a preferred choice for heavy-duty construction, marine work, and challenging outdoor projects.

Colour & Grain: Azobé unfolds a dark reddish to purple-brown hue, a testament to its toughness. The grain is usually straight, though occasional interlocking patterns might present a distinct character.

Patterns: Its inherent density and grain pattern may present subtle ripple effects or streaks, adding depth and uniqueness.

Durability: Azobe, commonly known as Ekki, is renowned for its exceptional durability. It is highly resistant to decay and has a long lifespan, making it a popular choice for heavy-duty applications like marine work, bridge construction, and railway sleepers.

Workability: Azobe is a very dense and hard timber, making it challenging to work with. Standard tools may blunt quickly, and specialized equipment or carbide-tipped tools are often required. Despite its workability challenges, its strength and longevity make it a sought-after material for specific projects.

Insect Attack: Due to its high density and natural oils, Azobe is exceptionally resistant to insect attacks, including termites and marine borers.

Fixings: When working with Azobe, it's recommended to pre-drill holes for fixings to avoid splitting. Because of its high tannin content, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fixings should be used to prevent corrosion and staining.

Fire: Azobe's natural density makes it relatively fire-resistant compared to softer woods. However, specific fire ratings would depend on tests and treatments. Generally, it would have a better rating than lighter timbers but might not reach the standards of specially treated fire-resistant materials.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
