Product Description: Okoumé Timber

Our Planed All Round timbers come in standard stock sizes, if you require specific dimensions head over to our Cutting Service page. PAR timbers are planed on all four faces along the length, with rough-sawn end faces.

Overview

Originating from the equatorial rainforests of Central Africa, Okoumé is lauded for its lightweight characteristics and impressive adaptability. Sometimes termed Gaboon, this timber is identified by its lightness, fine texture, and a colour spectrum that ranges from pale pink to a light reddish-brown. Due to its ease of handling and uniformity, Okoumé becomes a favoured choice for veneers, boat building, and fine furniture crafts.

Board Edges: Available in Planed All Round (PAR).

Colour & Grain: Okoumé unfurls a palette from soft pink to a muted reddish-brown. The grain is predominantly straight, exuding a serene, streamlined appearance.

Patterns: While generally consistent in its texture, subtle variations or waves in the grain occasionally surface, adding an element of intrigue.

Durability: As per the BS EN350-2 standard, Okoume exhibits moderate durability. Its resistance to decay and rot, especially when treated, makes it suitable for various applications, both indoors and out.

Workability: Okoume's standout feature is its ease of workability. Being lightweight yet durable, it is easy to saw, cut, and glue. The timber's adaptability, combined with its affinity for veneers and finishes, positions Okoume as a top choice for marine, aviation, and general woodworking projects.

Insect Attack: Okume can be susceptible to certain wood borers and beetles. Regular checks and treatments can deter these pests.

Fixings: Stainless steel nails or screws are ideal for Okume. Pre-drill to prevent potential splitting.

Fire: Okume generally falls within fire classifications from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0, based on the treatments used.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
