Originating from the cooler regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Larch stands as a unique softwood that boasts qualities akin to hardwoods. Colour & Grain: Larch displays a spectrum from light golden brown to deeper reddish tones. Its grain is typically straight, occasionally interwoven, imparting a rich texture.

Patterns: While most it presents a steady grain pattern, periodic knots or grain deviations can accentuate its rustic allure.

Durability: In terms of the BS EN350-2 standard, Larch is known for its impressive durability. It's naturally resistant to decay and insect attack, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Workability: Larch wood is denser and tougher than many softwoods, yet it remains easy to work with. It machines, cuts, and finishes well. Its resilience and strength make it a top pick for construction, especially in outdoor settings, like decking and cladding.

Insect Attack: Larch is prone to pests such as the Larch Casebearer and Spruce Budworm. It's crucial to routinely inspect the timber to ascertain its quality and ensure it remains pest-free.

Fixings: For larch timber, it's advisable to use stainless steel nails or screws. Pre-drilling is recommended to prevent potential splitting.

Fire: Larch generally aligns with fire classifications from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
