Sourced from the lush rainforests of Southeast Asia, Meranti stands out for its durability and broad application range. Occasionally referred to as Red or Dark Red Meranti, this timber is characterized by its medium to hard density, smooth texture, and a colour palette that oscillates between light reddish tones to deeper browns. Owing to its versatility and inherent beauty, Meranti is an excellent choice for window frames, doors, and cabinetry.

Colour & Grain: Meranti showcases a spectrum that spans from pale reddish hues to richer browns. It possesses a predominantly straight grain, radiating a consistent, sophisticated allure.

Durability: As per the BS EN350-2 standard, Meranti offers good durability, making it resistant to decay. Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, it stands resilient against diverse environmental conditions when treated appropriately.

Workability: Meranti is a versatile timber that machines smoothly and finishes beautifully. Its moderate density and uniform texture allow for easy sawing, nailing, and gluing. With its robustness complemented by its aesthetic appeal, Meranti is an excellent choice for an array of woodworking ventures.

Insect Attack: Meranti is vulnerable to termites and certain wood borers. Regular monitoring and preventive treatments are essential.

Fixings: Stainless steel nails or screws are recommended for Meranti. Pre-drilling helps avoid splitting.

Fire: Meranti ranges between Euroclass F (Untested) and D-s2, d0 in fire classifications, depending on specific treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
