Originating from the vibrant forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, Merbau is highly regarded for its durability and rich colour palette. This timber boasts a medium-to-heavy weight, refined feel, and a striking reddish-brown hue. Transitioning from a warm orange-brown to a darker reddish tint, its visual allure is magnified in premium decking, intricate furniture, and decorative interiors.

Colour & Grain: Merbau unfurls a distinctive reddish-brown, which deepens beautifully over time. The grain, generally straight, occasionally exhibits intriguing wavy patterns.

Patterns: Though largely uniform, intermittent yellowish flecks or specks intensify its visual charm.

Durability: Merbau, commonly known as Kwila, is renowned for its outstanding durability and resistance to both rot and decay. Its long-lasting nature makes it an excellent choice for exterior applications such as decking, marine environments, and outdoor furniture.

Workability: Merbau has a generally good workability, though it can be tough on tools due to its density. Its yellowish-brown sap can cause staining when the wood is fresh, so care should be taken when handling. Carbide-tipped blades and cutters are recommended for machining, and pre-drilling is advised for nailing and screwing.

Insect Attack: The wood is naturally resistant to termites and most other wood-boring insects, thanks to its inherent properties and oils.

Fixings: Due to Merbau's density, it is recommended to pre-drill holes for fixings to prevent splitting. Using stainless steel or brass fixings is advisable, as they won't react with the tannins in the wood, preventing potential staining.

Fire: Merbau's natural density provides it with a level of inherent fire resistance. Its specific fire rating would depend on the specific conditions and treatments, but generally, it offers better fire resistance than many softer timber varieties.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
