Durability: Sipo, also known as Utile, is a durable wood with good resistance to decay and rot. It is often considered a good alternative to genuine mahogany due to its similar appearance and working properties. It is used in various applications like cabinetry, boatbuilding, and veneers.

Workability: Sipo machines well, though its interlocked grain can occasionally cause tearout during operations like planing. However, it turns, glues, stains, and finishes effectively. It's advisable to use sharp tools when working with Sipo for optimal results.

Insect Attack: Sipo offers moderate resistance to termites and other wood-boring insects. Still, as with any wood type, it's essential to monitor for signs of potential infestation and take preventive measures when necessary.

Fixings: Given Sipo's density, pre-drilling is advised when using screws or nails to prevent splitting, especially close to board edges. High-quality stainless steel or brass fixings are recommended to avoid potential chemical reactions with the wood's natural compounds.

Fire: The inherent density of Sipo grants it some level of fire resistance. However, specific fire ratings would hinge on distinct conditions and applied treatments. Generally speaking, Sipo offers a better fire resistance than many softer wood varieties.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
