Durability: Cherry, as per the BS EN350-2 standard, stands as a moderately durable timber. While it's favored for interior embellishments and furniture, external applications necessitate proper treatment.

Workability: Cherry timber's renowned workability makes it a favorite among woodworkers. Easy to machine, carve, and turn, it finishes beautifully, highlighting its rich tones and subtle grain patterns. Whether it's for intricate joinery or grand furniture pieces, Cherry is synonymous with excellence and elegance.

Insect Attack: Cherry wood can attract certain beetles and borers. Regular monitoring and treatments are crucial.

Fixings: Stainless steel nails or screws are recommended for Cherry wood. Pre-drilling is advised to prevent board splits.

Fire: Cherry typically ranks between Euroclass F (Untested) and D-s2, d0 in fire classifications, contingent on the applied treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
