Emerging predominantly from the cool climates of Europe and North America, Sycamore is celebrated for its clean, pale appearance combined with a subtle sheen. Colour & Grain: Sycamore showcases a pale, almost white hue, complemented by its subtle grain, which typically flows straight and true.

Patterns: Although Sycamore usually presents a consistent texture, certain specimens may exhibit ripple figures or bird’s-eye patterns, enhancing its charm.

Durability: Sycamore, in line with the BS EN350-2 standard, offers a moderate level of durability. It's primarily suited for indoor applications but can be adapted for external use when treated appropriately.

Workability: Renowned for its versatility, Sycamore timber is a pleasure to work with. Whether turned, carved, or shaped, it responds beautifully, proving itself as an exceptional choice for cabinetry, musical instruments, and ornate woodworking pieces. Insect Attack: Sycamore is susceptible to a variety of wood borers and beetles. Regular inspections and treatments can keep these pests at bay.

Fixings: Stainless steel nails or screws are ideal for Sycamore. Pre-drill to avoid splitting.

Fire: Sycamore falls within fire classifications from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0, depending on specific treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
