Overview

Emerging predominantly from the vast woodlands of North America, Red Oak stands as a testament to beauty and durability. Renowned for its distinct grain patterns and warm reddish tones, this timber is a harmonious blend of aesthetics and resilience. Its palette, transitioning from light pink to deep reddish-brown, has made Red Oak a favoured choice for furniture, flooring, and joinery.

Appearance

Board Edges: Available in Waney Edge / Live Edge or Square Edge.

Colour & Grain: It  showcases a spectrum of light pink to a pronounced reddish-brown. Its grain is typically straight with coarse textures, lending depth and character to its appearance.

Patterns: While the majority of it maintains a consistent grain pattern, occasional flare-ups of unique grain swirls enhance its visual appeal.

Durability: Per the BS EN350-2 standard, Red Oak is moderately durable. It requires treatment for resistance against decay, especially for exterior applications.

Workability: Red Oak is a dense hardwood but remains relatively easy to work with. Known for its open grain and coarse texture, it machines well and can be stained to a stunning finish. Red Oak is a staple in cabinetry, flooring, and furniture due to its beauty and strength.

Insect Attack: Red Oak can be targeted by beetles, particularly the powderpost beetle. Regular monitoring and treatments can help in prevention.

Fixings: Use stainless steel nails or screws with Red Oak to prevent staining and corrosion. Pre-drilling is recommended to prevent splitting.

Fire: Red Oak typically ranges from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0 in fire classifications, contingent on specific treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
