Overview

Originating mainly from the colder regions of the Northern Hemisphere, Spruce is lauded for its light colour, strength, and versatility. Traditionally used in construction and instrument crafting, Spruce’s consistent grain and sound properties have cemented its place in history. With hues ranging from whitish to pale yellow, it brings brightness and functionality to interiors and crafts.

Board Edges: Waney Edge / Live Edge or Square Edge.

Colour & Grain: Spruce unveils a spectrum of near-white to pale yellow shades. Its grain is typically straight and uniform, imparting a clean, consistent look.

Patterns: Generally, Spruce maintains a uniform pattern, but on occasion, it might showcase interesting wavy or spiral grains.

Durability: According to the BS EN350-2 standard, Spruce is moderately durable. While it is naturally resistant to decay, it's best suited for indoor applications or treated appropriately for outdoor use.

Workability: Spruce timber is lightweight and easy to work with, offering good strength relative to its weight. Known for its smooth surface and straight grain, it machines and finishes well. Spruce is a popular choice for construction, musical instruments, and craft projects due to its versatility and consistent quality.

Insect Attack: Spruce is prone to attacks from bark beetles, wood wasps, and spruce budworms. Regular inspections and preventative treatments are recommended.

Fixings: Stainless steel nails or screws are best for Spruce. It's advisable to pre-drill to prevent splitting.

Fire: Spruce generally falls within fire classifications from Euroclass F (Untested) to D-s2, d0, based on specific treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
