Durability: Zebrawood, known for its striking striped appearance, offers moderate durability. It is not as durable as some of the denser tropical hardwoods, but it is sufficiently robust for many interior applications like cabinetry, furniture, and veneers.

Workability: Zebrawood can be somewhat challenging to work with due to its interlocked grain, which can cause tearout during planing or other woodworking operations. It responds well to sharp tools and machines decently, but care should be taken during processes that may cause splintering. Despite these challenges, it can be finished to a high polish, showcasing its distinctive pattern.

Insect Attack: While Zebrawood has some resistance to termites and other wood-boring insects, it isn't especially known for its insect resistance. As always, it's essential to monitor for signs of potential infestation and act accordingly.

Fixings: Given Zebrawood's unique grain pattern and density, it's recommended to pre-drill before introducing fixings to minimize potential splitting. High-quality stainless steel or brass fixings are ideal to prevent any unwanted reactions or staining.

Fire: Zebrawood's fire resistance is relatively average among hardwoods. While it might offer better fire resistance than many softwoods, it doesn't particularly excel in this category. Its specific fire rating would depend on particular conditions and treatments.

Grades

Timber Grades 

Class A/B Mix / FAS (Recommended): FAS quality, cabinetry grade timber. Mostly no knots, with some knots spaced no less than 1m apart.

Class A / PRIME (Joinery Grade - No Knots): Our PRIME equivalent. Our highest grade of timber, carefully selected for the client. No significant knots. Ideal for the finest joinery and cabinetry, for long sections for windows, doors, furniture and claddings. 

  • Accepted: Mild grain deviation, subtle colour differences, centre splits with measurement deduction, few isolated defects
  • Not Accepted: Significant knots, erratic grain, decay, bark enclosures, extensive insect damage

Class B / COMMON (Joinery Grade - Few Knots): COMMON grade equivalent. High-quality with minimal knots spaced at least 1m apart. Ideal for furniture, joinery, and cabinetry, similar to "prime-grade" as per NHLA grading. 

  • Accepted: Gentle grain deviation, knots up to 40mm, minimum 1000mm Clear Wood Cutting, other defects outside of Clear Wood Cutting
  • Not Accepted: Erratic grain structures, decay, bark pockets, and overwhelming insect disturbances.

Class C / RUSTIC Grade. Contains more knots and imperfections, with the classic rustic appearance. Aesthetically desirable for many projects.

  • Accepted: All knots and imperfections. Centre splits with adjusted measurement.
  • Not Accepted: Decay and severe insect damage, extensive movement defects.
